Good reading in above link on rotary engine wear and oils etc. for the RX8. Makes you think as to what is the "best" oil for the Renesis engine, or if it really matters.
It would appear that cold starts and high revving is a definite killer for our engine.
I did read on a UK RX8 forum that the Renesis typically took about 20 minutes from cold before the oil was fully up to temperature. This was measured using the Mazdaspeed gauges and totally disregarded the factory engine temperature gauge. The factory gauge is a simple “idiot” gauge and does not indicate as to when the oil is fully up to temperature but simply shows that the engine has reached a satisfactory temperature as far as Mazda is concerned.
Basically what this means is you should keep revs low and refrain from high revving just because the “temperature gauge” indicates that it is OK, and wait about 20 minutes before flooring it and hitting the rev limiter etc etc.

This is a good point, us rotor heads tend to get caught up in grades and viscosities (myself included), whats required is a holistic approach to engine maintenance in terms of the oil changes and choice, ignition, proper warm up times etc.
The housing scoring in the link above point @ OMP failure considering the age, its my belief that the oil metering system in the R1s and 2s are inadequate. For this reason, I've started to premix, its arguably too late in the day if any damage has been done but at least it gives me some piece of mind in terms of providing some form of protection if the pump malfunctions.

I agree that some wear on the apex seals is the fault of the oil metering pump, but the wear on the eccentric shaft bearings has nothing to do with the oil metering pump.
I personally believe that over revving of a cold engine and possibly a lack of good maintenance is the cause of the bearing wear on that engine. Obviously it is not possible to be absolutely certain as to what is the actual cause but again this type of wear is indicitave of a lack of lubrication on cold start up and is not unique to the rotary engines.
It does frighten me as to whether the Renesis is going to give up the ghost at any moment. I have been premixing for about a year now and I also hope it was not to late for my RX8

IMHO, i would not use a full syntetic oil such as those you have linked to. Look for a full mineral or semi-syntetic oil. Those full syntetic oils can seperate from the petrol if left standing for any lenght of time and also they have a reputation for gumming up the petrol filter (sock) on the petrol pump.
There are rotary premix oils available for our engine (i.e. Idemitsu) but I have not found a supplier locally. Amsoil also make a suitable premix oil, the name of which escapes at present.
I have been using Castrol Act>evo 2T which is a basic 2stroke mineral oil designed for scooters, so far no issues with this oil and is readily available almost anywhere in Dublin. I mix at 200cc/250cc per full tank of petrol.

CJ,
that oil looks ideal for our premix. Clean burning and ashless. Quote- "It is ideal for use in engines which are used seasonally or infrequently" this is also very important as it means it will not seperate from the petrol if left standing and will not form waxy deposits on the petrol filter.
I might place an order for a litre or four.
